The result as Your Lordship will observe is very satisfactory, and I shall direct its publication in the Chinese Gazette.
I shall also transmit it to Peking with a view to the British Minister there taking steps to obtain from the Highest Authority a general sanction for receipt of the Hongkong Dollar in payment of Imperial Customs at every Chinese Port, as well as at Canton.
Without the complete recognition by the Chinese Government of the intrinsic value of the Hongkong Dollar corresponding with the value which this Government states it to represent, all prospects of the Mint being of any use would of course be at an end.
